The History behind Jefferson County
In fact, the history of East Tennessee was established in 1792. The State of Franklin claimed it first, between the years of 1784-1788. After this time, Jefferson County was named after the Secretary of State, Thomas Jefferson. He became our 3rd president in 1797.
There is a church, the Christ Temple AME Zion Church, was built in 1888 and still stands in Dandridge, Tennessee. It is recognized today as a historic African American church. Dandridge was named after our first president’s wife, Marth Dandridge Washington.
In Jefferson City, you will find the Banner-Hicks House, which was built in approximately 1855. This house was built on land that had been acquired by George Branner during the 1830s. He got it for his son, Benjamin Manassah Branner, who served as a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Confederate States Army when the American Civil War was taking place 1861-1865.
